NEW CARLISLE - The New Carlisle Newts (3-6) will try to get off the early-season schneid on Sunday afternoon against the winless Warren Desperados (0-9).
After a promising series victory over Mishawaka on Opening Day, the Newts have dropped five straight and have struggled to get anything going offensively. With the wind howling in for the home opener last weekend, the Newts managed just two runs in 40 innings of play. The team is hitting .208 on the season, with Scott Soos leading the way at just .297.
Playing in their inaugural season, the Desperados lineup has also sputtered. Warren's 25 runs is the lowest in the league, and their run differential of -84 is the league's worst by a considerable margin.
Conditions at Migley Field should be more favorable to hitters this weekend. Warm temperatures, mostly sunny skies, and winds blowing straight out at 15-25 mph are in the forecast.
The Newts will be without ace starting pitcher Aidan Cotter, whose 2.89 ERA has been the highlight of the year thus far. New Carlisle will likely turn to a three-man rotation with Garrett Curless, Koby Keck, and Jared Emmons listed as the probable starters for the series.
Soos will be a game time decision for the series. Noah Shail, who has just seven plate appearances in less than two full games this season, will not be available.
LAST WEEK:
New Carlisle was swept by Glen Lee, 1-0, 1-0 (F/7), 5-2 (F/27)
Warren was swept by Mill Pond, 21-1, 12-0, 12-7
