NEW CARLISLE - Three New Carlisle Newts players have been selected to represent the National League at the 2022 Old Republic Wiffle®Ball League All-Star Game on Friday, June 24 at Migley Field.
Garrett Curless was voted a starter for the senior circuit. Curless has been selected for the All-Star Game 14 times, which ties the league record for most all-time. Outside of a two-year stretch from 2012 to 2013, he has been an All-Star in every other ORWBL season.
Curless leads the Newts in home runs (39) and runs batted in (49) this season. He has managed to pull his batting average up to a respectable .463 despite some brutal hitting conditions in several early season series.
A three-time champion of the event (2008, 2009, 2020), Curless will represent the host team in the Home Run Derby that kicks off the festivities at 6pm ET.
Scott Soos and Aidan Cotter were selected as reserves for the NL.
Soos leads the club with a .479 batting average and has 15 homers with 31 RBI thus far. The All-Star nod gives Soos 11 selections for his 11-year ORWBL career. Soos has twice been the All-Star Game's Most Valuable Player (2014, 2018) and has won the league's Home Run Derby three times (2014, 2015, 2016).
Although he will not be in attendance, Cotter was selected for the sixth time in seven seasons. He has done the majority of the pitching for New Carlisle this season, maintaining a 4.14 ERA despite a 4-9 record.
The Newts home ballpark will be hosting the festivities for the 15th time. The annual tradition of playing at the Friendly Confines started in the league's inaugural season in 2007. Poor field conditions due to rain caused the location of the 2019 game to be shifted.
