Newts take two in Father's Day tilt

NEW CARLISLE - There was little time for wifflers to relax with family on Father's Day, as ORWBL play took center stage on Sunday afternoon. The New Carlisle Newts (10-11) took two of three against the Lynn Street Leprechauns, 19-4, 3-6, 4-0, at Rocko's Park.

Garrett Curless again led the way for the New Carlisle lineup, which smacked 21 hits off Nick Brassell in the series opener. Curless was seven for eight with six home runs. Koby Keck and Aidan Cotter each hit three long balls and Matt Soos added two more. Colton Boren also went deep in the game.

Cotter scattered four hits in the game, all solo home runs, to pick up the win on the mound.

The bats went quiet for New Carlisle in the second game. Despite a leadoff home run to start it off by Curless, the Newts managed just two more runs the rest of the game on solo home runs by Cotter and Scott Soos.

In the rubber match, Curless smacked his third straight lead off home run. Cotter provided back-up with another first inning bomb to give the Newts an early 2-0 lead.

It was plenty of run support for Curless, who allowed just two hits in a complete game effort on the mound.

Cotter gave the Newts some additional insurance in the sixth, with a two-run shot to score Scott Soos.

New Carlisle continues a nine-game road trip next week with a trip to South Bend to face the Scottsdale Sluggers. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm ET on Sunday, June 26.
