Newts take two in blustery opener

NEW CARLISLE - The New Carlisle Newts opened their 20th season in the Old Republic Wiffle®Ball League on Sunday afternoon at Migley Field.

After dropping the season opener against the visiting County Line Knights, New Carlisle bounced back to take the final two games to win the Opening Day Series, 10-15, 14-9, 12-9.

Tyler Shupert and Garrett Curless paced the offense with six home runs each in the series. Brett Mason hit five dingers, while Bryce Bloode and Scott Soos both hit four.

Curless earned the victory on the mound in game two, and Soos got the pitching win in the rubber match.

It was the final Opening Day at Migley Field. The Newts announced earlier this week that the historic ballpark will close at the conclusion of the 2026 season.

After a week off for Mother's Day, the Newts will be back in action on Saturday, May 16 against the Twin Branch Billy Goats. Although a road series for the Newts, the games will be played at Migley Field at the Billy Goats' request.
