Newts sweep Heat at Migley

Updated: Jun 10

NEW CARLISLE - With the wind blowing in their face, the New Carlisle Newts didn't score much on Sunday afternoon. With ace Matt Soos on the mound, they didn't need to.

New Carlisle swept the Hudson Lake Heat, 2-0, 1-0, 4-2.

Soos earned all three victories with complete game efforts, allowing just two runs over 18 innings pitched. His ERA sits at 0.45 at the halfway mark of the season.

The Newts took control of the series early, as Garrett Curless homered in the bottom of the first of the opener to give Soos the run support he needed. Aidan Cotter provided an insurance run in the fifth, lacing a double to center field to score Tyler Shupert.

In the second game, Soos surrendered just one hit. New Carlisle again got the run they needed in the first, when Noah Shail scored on a Shupert RBI groundout.

The finale saw a little more action on the scoreboard. Hudson Lake struck first on an Evan King RBI single.

The lead was short lived for the Heat, as New Carlisle put up the series' only multi-run inning. Shail tied the game with an RBI single, and Curless followed it up with a two-run bomb to give the Newts a 3-1 advantage.

Jared Monhaut played long ball in the third inning, belting Hudson Lake's only home run of the series to cut it to 3-2.

Monhaut then came in to pitch in the fourth inning, and promptly gave up a solo shot to Shail, which provided the game its final score.

The sweep improved New Carlisle to 12-3 at the midpoint of the regular season schedule. The Newts will host the Twin Branch Billy Goats (13-2) next Sunday, June 9 at Migley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:20pm ET.
