NEW CARLISLE - Hoping to build momentum on last week's sweep of Lynn Street, the New Carlisle Newts (11-16) were back in action on Sunday afternoon at Migley Field. Unfortunately, New Carlisle slipped on the field and in the standings, getting swept by South Bend (14-13) at a muddy Migley Field.
The series was originally scheduled to start at 1:20pm ET, a Sunday tradition dating back to 2008. However, South Bend needed extra time to get to the ballpark, as a Griffleball tournament took priority over the ORWBL series. In all, the game was delayed by an hour and 20 minutes.
While conditions remained dry throughout the delay, rain started to fall shortly after the series began creating a quagmire in the batter's boxes.
Offense for both teams was hard to find. South Bend batted .250 as a team for the series, scoring just 15 total runs. But they adjusted to the conditions better than the Newts, who scored just nine runs with a .217 team batting average.
Matt Soos hit three home runs in the series for New Carlisle, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the five hit by South Bend's Ian Garavalia and four by former Newt Ryan Galiher.
The sweep guarantees a losing season for the Newts, their first since 2018. New Carlisle concludes the regular season next weekend with the home finale against the Union Mills Goon Squad. First pitch is scheduled for 1:20pm ET.
