UNION MILLS - The Barnyard has been a house of horrors for the New Carlisle Newts over the years. Prior to Sunday's series, the Newts were 0-6 with an average margin of defeat of over 11 runs at Flat Rock.
Garrett Curless wouldn't let that trend continue, leading the Newts (4-5) to a sweep of the Cyclones, 2-0, 4-3 (F/8), 7-1.
Curless picked up two wins on the mound, including a one-hit shutout in the series opener. At the plate, the slugger was nine for 17 with five home runs in the series. He also drove in nine of the Newts 13 total runs.
In addition to cobbling together the lineup, manager Tyler Shupert added eight hits, including a homer, for New Carlisle. D.J. Hill also homered in his season debut for the Newts.
Matt Soos earned the pitching victory in the second game, outlasting the Cyclones in eight innings.
New Carlisle continues a 9-game road-trip on Sunday, June 1 with a visit to Mishawaka's Rose Park.
