Newts home woes continue in crosstown loss

NEW CARLISLE - The New Carlisle Newts (8-10) dropped yet another home series on Sunday afternoon, this time losing two of three to the Bourissa Hills Wildcards, 2-5, 2-8, 6-5 (F/8).

Garrett Curless took both losses on the mound. Both games were tough luck defeats for the southpaw, as he was the only Newt to provide any run (and hit) support. Curless was 2 for 4 in the opener and 4 for 5 in the second game. His two solo blasts in each game accounted for all of the New Carlisle scoring. The rest of the lineup went a combined 0 for 33.

Noah Shail took over the pitching duties in the middle of the second game, allowing just one run in relief to earn himself the start in the finale.

Shail got himself an early lead in game three with a solo home run in the bottom of the first.

The Wildcards answered in the third with back-to-back home runs by Zach Rehlander and Cody Carlisle, to take a 2-1 advantage.

Carlisle knocked in another run in the fourth, and later scored on a Danny Hernandez two-run homer to make it 5-1, Cards.

Curless cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run shot of his own. He would score again in the fifth, when Shail smashed one into the left field bleachers to tie it up.

After pitching scoreless sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, Shail led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off home run to salvage a victory for New Carlisle.

The series wrapped up a 12-game homestand in which the Newts posted a 5-7 record. Including the relocated Twin Branch series, New Carlisle has played 15 consecutive games at Migley, going just 6-9.

New Carlisle will hope to see their fortunes improve on a nine-game road trip which begins on Father's Day against the Lynn Street Leprechauns at Rocko's Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm ET.
