Clones get the sweep

UNION MILLS - Having lost seven of their last nine games heading into Sunday, a road-trip to The Barnyard to face the undefeated Flat Rock Cyclones (21-0) was the last thing the New Carlisle Newts (8-13) wanted to see on the schedule.

And it went just as poorly as you think it would.

The Cyclones scored 13 runs in the first inning of the opening game and were never threatened the rest of the way, easily sweeping New Carlisle, 26-7, 49-18, 20-9.

The second game was the worst ORWBL loss in Newts franchise history, both by margin and runs allowed. The Newts haven't suffered a defeat this bad since losses of 39-10 and 41-14 on July 17, 2011 against the Wills Township Federalists.

The highlight of the day for New Carlisle occurred in game two when Garrett Curless blasted his 400th career home run. He joins teammate Scott Soos as the only players to reach the milestone.

Due to the Independence Day holiday, the Newts have a quick turnaround this week. New Carlisle will host the Lynn Street Leprechauns (8-13) on Friday, July 2 at Migley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00pm ET, and the series will feature the first night game at the Friendly Confines since 2017.
