ELKHART - The end of the Old Republic Wiffle Ball League regular season can't come soon enough for the New Carlisle Newts (11-10), who dropped their sixth straight game on Sunday afternoon. The Newts were swept by the Elkhart BFAM, 11-10, 11-8, 14-8.
The series started out well for New Carlisle, as they put up three runs in the first inning of the opener. Zarek Finley hit a two-run homer to score Scott Soos, while Matt Went followed with a solo blast.
After Garrett Curless worked a perfect inning in the bottom of the first, Went added another solo shot to make it 4-0. The lead was short-lived as a pair of defensive miscues opened the door for two Elkhart two-run home runs, the first by Walter Griffin III and another from Nick Fritz.
The game went back and forth until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Elkhart put up a five spot to take an 11-6 advantage. Finley answered in the fifth with a three-run bomb to cut the deficit to two.
Curless then singled home Went to pull the Newts within one, however the Newts rally ended with runners stranded on the corners.
Elkhart's Brandon Terry held the Newts scoreless in the sixth to finish off a complete game victory.
In the second game, Elkhart took a 4-1 lead after one inning and led 7-4 after three.
New Carlisle battled back to tie the game at seven in the fourth. Scott Soos hit his third home run of the game, and the Newts pulled even when Matt Soos singled home Finley.
In the bottom half, Elkhart opened the frame with four consecutive home runs to take an 11-7 lead.
Finley would hit another home run in the sixth to give the game its final score, 11-8.
Needing to salvage the finale to stop the losing streak and to have a long shot at the National League Eastern Division title, the Newts folded early in game three. New Carlisle fell behind 8-0 before recording their first hit in the fourth inning.
Despite receiving another three-home run game from Scott Soos, the Newts were never in the ballgame and were swept rather easily, 14-8.
Things won't get any easier for New Carlisle, as they will welcome the Granger Panthers (19-2) to Migley Field for the final series of the season on Sunday, June 30. First pitch is scheduled for 1:20pm ET.
