NEW CARLISLE - Three championships in the past five years has been a remarkable run for the New Carlisle Newts in the Old Republic Wiffleball League. However, the Newts performance in the 2018 regular season has raised serious concerns that New Carlisle could be falling off the league's mountaintop.
The Newts (11-13) dropped two of three against the Lynn Street Leprechauns (10-14) on Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season, 6-7, 10-7, 9-10. It's New Carlisle's first losing season since 2012, when the Newts stumbled to an 8-34 record.
Seven of New Carlisle's 13 losses were by a one-run margin, making a season full of near misses and "what-ifs" all the more frustrating.
New Carlisle finishes in fourth place in the National League, and will again face the Leprechauns next week in a one-game Wild Card Playoff. The winner will get a trip to the NLDS to challenge the NL's top seed Granger Panthers.
The Newts are hoping to find some sort of momentum in the postseason, something they have yet to capture over the past eight weeks.
