Newts wrap road trip with series victory

July 2, 2017

NEW CARLISLE - The New Carlisle Newts (17-7) finished up a nine-game road trip on Sunday by taking two of three from the Jet City Junkballers (16-11) at Old Rock Field, 7-5, 5-15, and 8-5.

Garrett Curless picked up both wins on the mound for the Newts, improving his record to 7-1 on the season.  Curless also provided the insurance in the sixth inning of each win.

In the opener, Curless hit a three-run home run to extend the Newts one-run lead to 7-3. While in the finale, he hit a two-run shot to give New Carlisle a three-run cushion.

Curless and Scott Soos each had three home runs in the rubber match.

It was the Newts first visit to Old Rock Field since the 2013 National League Division Series, when New Carlisle swept the Wills Township Federalists on their way to the franchise's first ORWBL World Series title.

New Carlisle wraps up the road trip with a 7-2 record and is now 10-2 away from Migley Field this season.

The Newts return to the Friendly Confines on Wednesday for a rematch of last year's World Series against the Maple City Magic.  First pitch is slated for 6:05pm ET.

Magic Number Down to Three

In other NL East action on Sunday, Emery's Army (10-14) swept the Mechanics (16-11). The three losses drop Olive Township to 2.5 games behind New Carlisle.  With six games to play for the Newts, and only three left for the Mechanics, the Newts' magic number is down to three.

New Carlisle is seeking their sixth division title in franchise history.  More importantly, the division winner avoids the one-game Wild Card Round.
