NEW CARLISLE - With the wind again blowing in at Migley Field, the opening games of the 2016 ORWBL World Series were shaping up to be exactly like the Hometown Cup Finals matchup between the New Carlisle Newts and Maple City Magic.
In Game 1, New Carlisle surrendered the first run on an inside the park home run by Wes Ellis. However, the Newts were able to answer back in the third to tie it at 1. The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the ninth.
And then Danny Hernandez happened.
Hernandez crushed a fly ball to right that even the wind couldn't knock down. Maple City's John Arndt couldn't knock it down either as he flew over the outfield fence trying to keep the ball in the yard.
In Game 2, the Newts took control of the game with a two-run home run by Scott Soos in the second.
Eric Johnson answered right back in the third with his first of two homers to cut it to 2-1. But in the bottom half, Noah Shail would tack on all the insurance Newts ace Jay Ryans would need with a back-breaking three-run shot to put the Newts up 5-1.
Johnson would later cut it to 5-3, but Ryans slammed the door in the sixth to give the Newts the 2-0 series lead.
Action shifts to Magic Park in LaPorte on Wednesday night for Games 3, 4, and 5 (if necessary). This is the fourth consecutive year New Carlisle has had an opportunity to close out the series on Wednesday. They have failed to do so on the previous three occasions.
