NEW CARLISLE - The new dimensions at a renovated Migley Field were expected to suppress offensive production a little. But with the wind howling straight in, offense was almost non-existent in the Newts home opener on Sunday.
New Carlisle scratched their way to a series victory over South Bend, 1-0, 1-2, 1-0. The five total runs for a three-game series is certainly a record in the ballpark's 10 year history.
Jay Ryans (2-1) picked up both New Carlisle wins on the mound. Ryans threw two complete game shutouts to drop his ERA to 1.41 on the young season.
The win in game one was the 300th victory in New Carlisle Newts franchise history, including all tournaments and ORWBL regular and postseason play. The Newts are 301-184 (.622) all-time.
At 3-3, the Newts are tied with the Cabo Yabos for first place in the National League East. The two teams will square off next week, with the Yabos hosting a key early season series.
