Cold Start: Newts drop opening series

LA PORTE - The New Carlisle Newts (1-2) still have not found an answer for Jared Emmons. The southpaw held the Newts offense in check all afternoon, as the Galena Marsh Dabbers (2-1) won the Opening Day series, 3-4, 7-1, 4-3.

Coming into the season with high expectations after a busy offseason, the Newts took the first game. New Carlisle was powered by home runs from newcomers Jake Lawrence, Jay Ryans, and Danny Hernandez.

Lawrence also had a solid outing on the mound, throwing a complete game with three strikeouts.

Unfortunately, the Newts never got rolling after that. Stymied by Emmons' pitching and the cold, windy conditions, New Carlisle never looked comfortable at the plate.

Lawrence took the loss in the second game, while Ryans was on the mound for the game three defeat.

Sunday's series marked the return of Emmons, Denis Jedrysek, and Jordan Smoroske to ORWBL. The former core of the original Pterodactyls had not been together since 2011.

New Carlisle returns to Migley Field on Sunday, May 22 for the home opener against South Bend. First pitch is slated for 1:20pm ET.
