NEW CARLISLE - Staring down another home series loss, the New Carlisle Newts needed late-inning heroics from Sean Touhey to escape Migley Field with a series victory against the Bertrand Bombers, 14-11, 5-12, and 17-15.
With the Newts trailing 15-14, and two outs in the bottom of the sixth in the series finale, Touhey stepped to the plate with Koby Keck and Matt Went on base. After a long at-bat with multiple foul balls, Touhey lifted a high fly ball into the wind carrying out into the leftfield bleachers.
In a series moved up to an 11:00am start time to avoid poor weather, New Carlisle looked sluggish all day. Despite the early start, the rains came anyway, turning the Migley Field batter's boxes into a muddy quagmire.
The shorthanded Newts had to call Kaylor Keck out of retirement to field a full lineup. He picked up the victory on the mound in the third game.
With the series win, the Newts move to 8-4 on the season. However, New Carlisle drops to third place after sweeps by both Cult West and Emery's Army.
The Newts are back on the road next weekend, with a trip out west to Maple City to face the Magic. First pitch for the series is tentatively scheduled for 4:00pm ET.
