Newts pull away for sweep

SPICER LAKE - The New Carlisle Newts (3-0) capped off an Opening Day sweep of the Spicer Lake Soggy Bottom Boys (0-3) with an 11-6 victory at Dapper Dan Field.

Chayse Davis (1-0) struck out five batters over five innings to pick up the win on the mound. Longtime Newts closer Koby Keck finished it off, working a perfect sixth for the save.

New Carlisle jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, however Spicer Lake slowly chipped away and closed the deficit to just two heading into the sixth. Keck led off the final inning with his second home run of the game. Garrett Curless and Noah Shail added two more solo shots for good measure, giving the Newts a little more breathing room.

Keck drove in four runs on the game, including a three-run homer in the first inning. He was 2 for 5 on the game, both hits coming via the long ball.

Shail was a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate and finished the opening series batting .824.

Curless hit two home runs in the final game, and he leads the team with eight on the season. His home run in the sixth inning was the 195th in his career (stat-keeping era only).

New Carlisle returns to Migley Field next Sunday, May 24 for their home opener against rival Rolling Prairie. First pitch is slated for 1:20pm ET.
